Background of the Study
Digital media has revolutionized auditory communication, with podcasts emerging as a popular medium alongside traditional radio. In Nigeria, both podcasts and radio broadcasts serve as key platforms for disseminating information, yet they may differ significantly in their phonological patterns. Podcasts often adopt a conversational and relaxed tone, influenced by the informal nature of digital media, whereas radio speech tends to adhere to standardized pronunciation norms and formal articulation (Ibrahim, 2023). This study compares the phonological features—such as pronunciation, intonation, and stress patterns—across Nigerian podcasts and radio speech. By analyzing audio samples from both media, the research aims to determine how the medium influences phonetic realization and whether digital trends are reshaping traditional phonological norms. Understanding these differences is crucial for media professionals, language technologists, and educators, as it informs the development of effective speech processing tools and broadcasting standards. Recent technological advances in audio analysis facilitate a nuanced investigation of these phonological variations (Ibrahim, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although digital media is transforming communication in Nigeria, there is limited research comparing the phonological patterns of podcasts and radio broadcasts. Existing studies often focus on either medium in isolation, neglecting the impact of digital trends on phonetic standards. This gap hinders our understanding of how new media forms might be altering traditional pronunciation and intonation patterns, potentially affecting listener comprehension and cultural identity. Addressing this gap is essential for media practitioners and language technologists aiming to optimize content delivery across platforms (Ibrahim, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
To analyze phonological features in Nigerian podcasts and radio broadcasts.
To compare differences in pronunciation, intonation, and stress patterns.
To evaluate the influence of digital media on traditional phonological norms.
Research Questions
What phonological differences exist between podcasts and radio speech in Nigeria?
How do digital media trends influence these phonetic patterns?
What are the implications for listener comprehension?
Significance of the Study
This study provides vital insights into the evolution of phonological patterns in Nigerian media. The findings will assist broadcasters, linguists, and technology developers in adapting to changes driven by digital media (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to comparing phonological features in Nigerian podcasts and radio broadcasts.
Definitions of Terms
